Asian Stock Markets Experience Record Gains
Asian stock markets saw a significant surge on Wednesday morning, matching the record gains observed on Wall Street the previous day. This upward movement is fueled by growing investor confidence in artificial intelligence (AI) technology and expectations of upcoming interest rate cuts in the United States.
The bull run comes ahead of a major announcement from the US Federal Reserve scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Analysts are anticipating a quarter-percentage-point reduction in lending rates, which could have a positive impact on market sentiment.
Additionally, the markets have been buoyed by increasing optimism regarding a potential deal to prevent a damaging trade war between the world’s two largest economies. US President Donald Trump is set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea, marking a key moment in their diplomatic engagement.
Trump, who arrived in South Korea after visiting Malaysia and Japan, has expressed confidence in reaching an agreement with Xi. These developments have contributed to a heightened sense of optimism on Wall Street, where Tuesday's trading session saw notable gains, including a 5% increase for AI giant Nvidia.
Chris Weston of Pepperstone noted in a report that there is "little sign of concern about holding tech risk into the upcoming Fed meeting, which in theory should be a lower-impact event on markets." He emphasized that the focus remains on the tech sector, where capital continues to flow.
Regional Market Performance
Japan's benchmark index experienced a more than 2% increase on Wednesday morning, while Seoul also saw a gain of over 1%—both reaching record highs. Shares in Taipei and Shanghai followed with moderate gains.
In contrast, Sydney's main index was down on Wednesday, while Hong Kong remained closed due to a public holiday. The overall momentum in the region has been driven by anticipation of upcoming earnings reports from major US tech companies such as Microsoft and Meta.
Impact of the AI Boom and Trade Policies
This year's AI boom has coincided with a series of global tariff measures introduced by the US president, which have particularly affected China. Despite these challenges, the markets continue to show resilience and optimism.
Before his arrival in South Korea, Trump told reporters on Air Force One that he expects “a lot of problems are going to be solved” during his first in-person meeting with Xi since returning to the White House this year. The two leaders are expected to meet on Thursday on the sidelines of the APEC summit, which is taking place in Gyeongju.
