Supermarkets have always been a go-to spot for baked goods, and Lidl has long been a favorite for its creative treats like the Dubai Style Muffin and Sugar Cronut. However, a new contender is stepping into the spotlight, potentially challenging Lidl's dominance in the bakery aisle.
Sainsbury’s has recently introduced a unique twist on a classic: the Taste the Difference Belgian Dark Chocolate and Fudge Sourdough Bloomer. This bread is packed with caramel fudge pieces and Belgian dark chocolate chunks, making it a sweet treat that costs £2.50. Although it's only been available for a few days, it has already generated a lot of excitement among customers.
Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram have been buzzing with posts about this new product, with Sainsbury’s fans expressing their surprise and delight. Many who haven’t tried it yet are eager to get their hands on it. One Instagram user wrote, “Need this in my life yesterday,” while another commented, “Erm gamechanger. Runs to Sainsbury’s.”
Those who have had the chance to try the loaf have given it positive feedback. One customer said, “Had it a few times and must say it’s the best thing ever.” Another food influencer described the taste as “a big brownie” and gave Sainsbury’s a rating of “20/10.”
This is a far cry from the sourdough starters that many people were trying to master just a short time ago. However, not everyone is impressed. TikToker @elmint was initially excited about the new product and decided to test it by serving two slices — one toasted and one not.

“If I was blindfolded I don’t think I would know that it was a chocolate sourdough loaf,” she revealed to her followers. “It honestly just tastes like a normal bit of sourdough.” While the toasted version had a more indulgent flavor, it still left her disappointed. “I definitely wouldn’t buy it again,” she said. “You’d probably be better off getting some normal sourdough, toasting it, and then popping some Nutella on it,” she added.
Interestingly, some bread lovers appreciated the fact that the chocolate wasn't too overpowering. They praised the balance between the caramel and Belgian chocolate chunks, saying it worked well together.
This news comes after Marks & Spencer (M&S) launched its own chocolate twist on a bakery classic: the chocolate Pastel de nata. Priced at £1.10, this treat features a creamy baked egg custard and chocolate filling inside an all-butter cocoa pastry. A Facebook user commented, “One of the best products M&S have sold for a long time! Worth £1.10.”
As the holiday season approaches, M&S is increasing its offerings of sweet treats. Recently, they launched their Big Mix chocolates. The Big Mix from M&S costs £7 for a 650g carton or £12 for a large 1.2kg tin. It includes a mix of 10 different sweets in colorful wrappers, suitable for vegetarians. The selection includes Salted Caramel, Coffee Truffle, Hazelnut in Caramel, Cream Toffee, Milk Crème, Caramel Fudge, Strawberry Crème, Orange Crème, Biscuit in Caramel, and a Butterscotch Éclair.
Customers have claimed that the Big Mix is “better than” the likes of Quality Street and Roses, calling the sweets a “real joy” to eat.
