Securing the Win: A Conversation with Oracle Red Bull Racing’s Chief Security Officer

In today’s digital age, Formula 1 teams face an ever-growing challenge when it comes to protecting sensitive information. With a vast array of systems, applications, and AI-driven workflows, the number of keys, tokens, and passwords in use has multiplied, creating numerous potential vulnerabilities. Oracle Red Bull Racing has taken a proactive approach by cultivating a culture that prioritizes information control while implementing secure and efficient software solutions.

Mark Hazelton, Oracle Red Bull Racing’s chief security officer, shared his insights during an interview on episode two of the Securing the Win podcast, hosted by Calum Nicholas. Reflecting on his two-decade journey within the team, Hazelton highlighted the long-standing issue of espionage, which has been a part of industry since its inception.

“Espionage is as old as there's been industry,” he said. “While someone has something they want to keep private, another party has always wanted to know about it. This is an ongoing issue for a very long time.”

The threat of espionage was brought into the spotlight in 2007 when a rival team was found to be in possession of another team’s intellectual property. Following an FIA investigation, the team was excluded from the championship and faced a $100 million penalty—the largest financial penalty of its kind at the time.

“Theft of IP, loss of IP, or accidental loss can mean the difference between winning and losing,” Hazelton warned.

Hazelton’s role within the team initially involved implementing ERP and CAD systems, but it has evolved over the years as the need for protection against information leakage has grown. He emphasized that the threats are no longer limited to espionage between companies.

“It's not just espionage anymore. It's also about protecting against ransomware, malware, phishing attacks, and other cyber threats. There's insider risk, the threat of loss to the competition, and we have to defend against various threat vectors in this complex ecosystem.”

To address these challenges, Oracle Red Bull Racing focuses on reducing friction in their processes, as hard logins and mislaid passwords can lead to shadow IT.

“We have to make things fluid and smooth where possible,” he said. “Our engineers are laser-focused on their tasks, so we try not to get in the way. Any time we implement something, we aim to make it easier.”

The goal is to reduce the length of these processes while maintaining data security. Hazelton noted that in the past, every application required a new password, but today, the process is much smoother.

“With a VPN, you fire up your laptop, and it connects automatically. These are the kinds of improvements we're constantly making. Tools like 1Password help us with this.”

From a high-performance computer engineer’s perspective, managing multiple passwords throughout the day can be a nightmare, according to Hazelton. By reducing friction using 1Password, the team can focus on their work without unnecessary interruptions.

Oracle Red Bull Racing has gone beyond improving sign-on methods by vaulting developer secrets and tightening control over where these can end up.

“We've implemented more single sign-on, and we're managing unmanaged apps that are evolving. This helps reduce friction for everyone in their daily jobs.”

Looking ahead, Hazelton warned of the potential impact of AI and quantum computing on the team’s operations.

“I think the big shift will be quantum computing mixed with AI. Who knows what that will bring?”

He sees AI as another tool to be used for success, building on the advanced mathematics and machine learning techniques already in place.

“We’ve used advanced analytics and machine learning for years. AI is another branch of that, and it's coming fast.”

Hazelton sums up his reality as “97% boredom, 3% sheer terror.” He believes that if the basics are handled correctly, the excitement won’t come into play.

With 1Password managing sensitive data, the team ensures that the routine 97% prevents the 3% from deciding a title.
