Key Evidence in Corruption Trial
In the ongoing corruption trial of Lim Guan Eng, the sessions court has heard critical evidence regarding the misuse of state-owned land. A key figure in this case is Zarul Ahmad Zulkifli, a businessman who allegedly served as a “tool” for the former Penang chief minister in the disposal of two plots of land.
Investigating officer Zulhilmi Halim from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) testified that Zarul’s firm was given an advantage when bidding for the undersea tunnel project. According to him, Consortium Zenith BUCG Sdn Bhd received two plots of land as payment for conducting feasibility studies and preparing detailed design plans for the tunnel. However, these studies were never carried out, and the design plans were not prepared.
Zulhilmi stated that the investigations revealed the project was created to “gift” the plots of land to Datuk Ewe Swee Kheng. He mentioned that Ewe, who passed away in 2021, had met Zarul in 2013. It is alleged that Ewe told Zarul he had previously met Lim and was assured that Zenith Construction would be granted ownership of Lot 702.
The court was also informed that Ewe’s company had been funding Zenith Construction since 2013—two years before the land transfer occurred. A total of RM79.8 million was paid between 2013 and 2015. Zulhilmi explained that such transactions, where Ewe paid Zarul first and later received the plot of land, did not make sense. He emphasized that this happened because Ewe was promised Lot 702.
No Motive to Frame Lim
Zulhilmi also addressed the possibility that Lim may have been framed by Zarul. He mentioned that Zarul had paid Lim RM3.3 million and gave him a watch. However, based on Zarul’s recorded statements, Zulhilmi concluded that Zarul had no motive against Lim. He noted that Zarul was in a favorable position and ultimately won the project.
“If Zarul had not been awarded the project, the situation would have been different,” Zulhilmi said. He expressed his belief in Zarul’s statements, highlighting that the circumstances suggested no intent to frame Lim.
Charges Against Lim Guan Eng
Lim Guan Eng faces several charges related to the undersea tunnel project. He is accused of using his position as Penang chief minister to request a 10% cut of the profits from the project and accepting RM3.3 million in kickbacks from Zarul. Additionally, he is charged with two counts of dishonestly misappropriating RM208.7 million worth of state land.
The trial continues before Judge Azura Alwi on Thursday, with further evidence expected to be presented. This case highlights the complexities of corruption allegations and the importance of thorough investigations to ensure justice is served. The court’s proceedings will continue to scrutinize the actions of all parties involved, aiming to uncover the truth behind the alleged misuse of public resources.
