PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) has taken significant steps in addressing bid-rigging practices by imposing a total penalty of RM97.3 million on 26 companies involved in a cartel related to tenders worth RM540.72 million. This move highlights the ongoing efforts by regulatory bodies to ensure fair competition and prevent unethical business practices.
The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, Armizan Mohd Ali, emphasized that MyCC is currently investigating 14 additional bid-rigging cases involving 563 companies. These cases are linked to tenders valued at RM2.7 billion, indicating a growing concern about the prevalence of such activities across various sectors.
Armizan highlighted the importance of the increased resources approved in the 2026 budget by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. He stated that these resources are crucial for enhancing MyCC's enforcement capabilities in the fight against bid-rigging. A portion of the ministry’s allocation has been specifically directed towards MyCC to support its operations and improve its ability to detect and address such violations.
During the MyCC Competition Summit held at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre, Armizan spoke about the need for continued vigilance and proactive measures. He called for MyCC to expand its enforcement actions beyond government procurement to include the private sector.
"Currently, the focus has been on tenders within government procurement. However, it is essential to extend our efforts to the private sector in 2026. If we do not curb bid-rigging in this sector, it will have a negative impact on the public and harm the ecosystem of healthy market competition," he said.
In addition to this, Armizan mentioned that his ministry is working closely with other government departments to facilitate the signing of a letter of understanding between MyCC and 16 other ministries. This collaboration aims to create a unified approach in combating bid-rigging cartels and ensuring a level playing field for all businesses.
