Nvidia hits $5 trillion market cap milestone

Nvidia Reaches $5 Trillion Valuation

Nvidia has made history by becoming the first company to reach a valuation of $5 trillion (€4.30tn), just three months after it crossed the $4tn threshold. This milestone highlights the massive impact of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution, which is being compared to the transformative shift brought about by the launch of the iPhone 18 years ago. The iPhone's success propelled Apple to become the first publicly traded company to hit $1tn, $2tn, and eventually $3tn in value.

However, with such rapid growth comes concerns about an AI bubble. Officials from the Bank of England recently warned that the surge in tech stock prices driven by the AI boom could lead to a market crash. Similarly, the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has raised alarms about the risks associated with this trend.

The insatiable demand for Nvidia’s chips has been a key driver behind its meteoric rise in stock value since early 2023. On Wednesday, the company’s shares reached $207.86 (€178.66) in early US trading, with 24.3 billion shares outstanding. This put its market capitalization at $5.05tn (€4.34tn). In comparison, Nvidia’s value surpasses the GDP of India, Japan, and the United Kingdom, according to the IMF.

Positive Signals from the Chipmaker

Nvidia continues to make headlines with several major announcements. On Tuesday, CEO Jensen Huang revealed $500 billion (€429.77bn) in chip orders. The same day, the company announced a partnership with Uber on robotaxis and a $1bn (€859.24mn) investment in Nokia, with both companies planning to collaborate on 6G technology.

Investors are closely watching as Nvidia partners with the Department of Energy to build seven new AI supercomputers. Additionally, last month, the company announced a $100bn (€85.92bn) investment in OpenAI as part of a partnership aimed at boosting computing power for ChatGPT, the AI chatbot developed by OpenAI.

In August, Huang mentioned discussions about a potential new computer chip designed for China with the Trump administration. President Donald Trump also mentioned on Air Force One that he will discuss Nvidia’s chips with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their meeting.

Semiconductor Tensions Between the US and China

Semiconductors have long been a point of contention between the US and China. However, investors are now hoping for a relaxation of trade restrictions on chips. A breakthrough in this area would be a relief for Huang, who has consistently criticized US restrictions. He has argued that these curbs are inadvertently helping China develop its own AI capabilities by forcing the country to reduce its reliance on US products.

It seems that Beijing may already understand this dynamic, even as Washington shows signs of softening its stance. After the US approved the export of H20 chips, China’s regulator banned its largest tech companies from purchasing Nvidia’s AI chips.

While it is possible that China’s restrictions on Nvidia chips could be a long-term policy, experts suggest that this move might be a bargaining chip in trade negotiations with Washington.
