Illegal Use of Halal Logo at Frozen Meat Outlet in Melaka
A frozen meat outlet located in Ayer Keroh, Melaka, was recently discovered using the word "halal" on its signboard without possessing a valid Malaysian Halal Certification (SPHM). This incident has raised concerns about the integrity of halal labeling and the need for stricter enforcement of regulations.
During a joint operation conducted by the Melaka KPDN (Kementerian Perdagangan Dalam Negeri, Koperasi dan Kepenggunaan) and the Melaka Islamic Religious Department (JAIM), authorities found 28.85 kg of frozen meat valued at RM7,802.15 that bore an unauthorized halal logo. The business owner was unable to provide a valid halal certificate, and the outlet was also not registered under the SPHM issued by JAKIM.
Dr Mohd Hazimin Jamaludin, director of Melaka KPDN, stated that the business owner is suspected of violating Order 4(1) of the Trade Descriptions (Definition of Halal) Order 2011. This order outlines the requirements for using the halal label under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011 (Act 730).
In addition to the halal logo violation, the shop was also fined for using an unverified electronic weighing scale, which contravenes the Weights and Measures Act 1972.
Dr Mohd Hazimin emphasized the importance of ensuring that all businesses adhere to halal certification standards. He warned traders against using misleading halal logos or displays that could deceive customers or create doubt about the authenticity of their products.
The Melaka KPDN continues to monitor and conduct operations to enforce the law and maintain consumer trust. They encourage consumers to report any misconduct or issues they encounter.
