Malaysia's Trade Agreement with the United States
Petaling Jaya: A prominent leader from Umno, Puad Zarkashi, has expressed his support for the recent trade agreement between Malaysia and the United States. He believes that this move was necessary given the country's relatively smaller economic size compared to the US.
Puad, a member of the Umno Supreme Council, emphasized that maintaining trade relationships with major economic powers like the United States is crucial for Malaysia. He pointed out that the reduction of tariffs on Malaysian exports from 25% to 19% by Washington is already a significant achievement.
He raised a rhetorical question in a Facebook post, asking, "What other options do we have? We are not like China, which can afford to respond to US tariffs by imposing their own tariffs on US exports."
Puad also questioned whether Malaysia would be in a better position if it had not signed the agreement. He added that the explanation provided by Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz regarding the deal gave him confidence in the government's decision.
He further stated that Tengku Zafrul’s explanation was more credible than the criticisms made by Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz and former Umno leader Isham Jalil.
Key Points of the Trade Agreement
Yesterday, Tengku Zafrul highlighted that without the trade agreement, Malaysia would have faced higher tariffs, which could have negatively impacted the nation's competitiveness, investments, and job market.
The agreement led to the removal of 1,711 tariff lines valued at RM22 billion. This significant change is expected to benefit Malaysian businesses and consumers.
Tengku Zafrul also clarified that the deal does not obligate Putrajaya to follow the US in imposing customs duties, prohibitions, or import restrictions on goods and services from other countries.
Addressing Concerns from the Opposition
In response to the opposition's concerns, Tengku Zafrul stated that the government is only required to impose restrictions on other countries when there are shared economic or national security concerns between the US and Malaysia.
This clarification aims to reassure stakeholders that the agreement does not compromise Malaysia's sovereignty or its ability to make independent decisions regarding trade policies.
Conclusion
The trade agreement with the United States marks a strategic move for Malaysia, aimed at strengthening its economic ties with a major global power. While there are concerns and criticisms, the government remains confident in the benefits of the agreement.
By reducing tariffs and removing numerous tariff lines, the deal is expected to enhance Malaysia's trade relations and support its economic growth. The government continues to emphasize that it will maintain its own policies while benefiting from the agreement.
Overall, the agreement represents a step forward in Malaysia's efforts to navigate the complex landscape of international trade and secure favorable terms for its economy.
